The role
The role of the technology architect is to design a secure and efficient hybrid infrastructure environment that seamlessly integrates on-premises and cloud resources to support a gradual migration of workloads to Microsoft Azure, M365 and D365. The role requires a breadth of experience across a range of infrastructure technologies and platforms and a thorough understanding of Microsoft Azure hub and spoke architecture, landing zone design and associated security controls. The role works closely with our business stakeholders, security and product delivery teams to understand their requirements and translate these into robust, scalable, resilient architecture patterns that are reusable, compliant by design assets from the outset.
Knowledge of on-premises, cloud computing, storage and networking are essential as this role designs and guides the implementation of the foundational infrastructure services that support our business services and applications. This role ensures that technology solutions align with enterprise architecture standards, security policies, and business objectives.
The team
The Technology architect reports to the Head of Architecture in the Data, Technology and Security (DTS) division and is part of the Enterprise Architecture team that helps develop, communicate and implement enterprise technology change. We define technical standards, create target state architecture and build investable technology roadmaps. We also support large enterprise transformation initiatives by working with procurement, business stakeholders, projects and product delivery teams.
Key stakeholders include the CIO, IT Governance, Enterprise Security, and Product delivery teams, along with the Chief Security Officer, Chief Data Officer, Chief Risk Officer, and Project Management Office.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain enterprise architecture artifacts including IT strategy and roadmaps for the transition of workloads to cloud services and decommissioning of on-premises infrastructure.
- Provide architectural leadership and ensure alignment to our enterprise IT strategy across various projects and stakeholders.
- Design resilient scalable, secure, and cost-effective infrastructure solutions connecting on premise, Azure, M365 and D365 and Oracle ERP platforms.
- Design and implement security measures and compliance controls across the technical landscape, including network security, access management, and data protection, extending these considerations to integrated cloud services.
- Collaborate with vendors and partners to ensure new technology services are delivered to APRA in a way that follows our standards, meets our security requirements and integrates with existing services.
- Work with product teams and procurement to evaluate and select emerging technology services to meet new business requirements and capabilities. Where necessary recommend adoption and deployment strategies
- Create and maintain documentation and models for architectures, configurations, standards and best practices.
- Assist with the management and running of the architecture practice by streamlining internal processes and contributing to a positive, dynamic and innovative team culture.
About you
- Significant experience in Information Technology with a deep understanding of IT infrastructure architecture and operations in a hybrid cloud configuration. You will have a good understanding and experience of networking, security and best practices for both on-premises and cloud environments.
- Experience in translating business requirements for resilience, recoverability, performance, cost and security to technical designs.
- Good understanding and experience of disaster recovery and business continuity planning for infrastructure.
- Experience in designing and implementing enterprise cloud architectures using Microsoft Azure and transitioning services to cloud.
- In-depth knowledge of networking concepts, including Traffic Management, Secure Access Service Edge, Virtual Networks, Network Security Groups, Azure Firewall, Express Route Private Peering.
- You will also have a good understanding of core Azure services such as Entra, Virtual Machines, Azure SQL Database, Azure Storage, Azure Arc, Monitor and associated integration patterns
- Expertise in designing and integrating on-premises infrastructure components, including servers networking (routing, switching, firewalls, load balancing, name resolution), and storage solutions (SAN, NAS).
- Good knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy
- Solid understanding of Australian government security frameworks including the Protective Security Policy Framework, Essential 8, and Information Security Manual.
- Demonstrable experience of applying security considerations at the design stage to identify threats and embed protective controls as standards or patterns.
- An understanding of security assurance and IRAP assessment processes is an advantage.
- Azure certifications such as Solutions Architect Expert, Azure Administrator Associate and Azure Security Engineer are advantageous as is experience of working in the financial services sector
