The role
The Manager, Software Engineering leads a team of software, cloud and AI engineers, working together to build and maintain end-to-end digital solutions – from user-facing web applications to workflow automation, system integrations and emerging AI-enabled services.
This is a key leadership role that combines technical depth with strategic vision, challenging the status quo and reimagining what is possible with technology. Responsible for accelerating the adoption of next-generation technologies, connecting business strategy and digital innovation. As a strong people leader and collaborator, you will inspire and grow a high performing engineering team, while influencing stakeholders across the organisation to co modern digital experiences to maximise the value of digital technologies to support evolving business needs.
Leading innovation is key to this role, as it involves continuously exploring emerging technologies, driving the adoption of AI and automation to increase productivity and efficiencies, and guiding business and technical teams in experimenting and delivering forward-thinking solutions and business value.
The team
APRA’s Technology team delivers, maintains, and enhances essential information technology services that support the organisation's productivity, strategic objectives, and business unit priorities.
Technology partners with stakeholders to design, implement and maintain IT solutions that meet the needs of the organisation and ensuring these are secure and aligned with APRA’s technology architecture.
Key responsibilities
- Lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary engineering team, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, collaboration and continuous learning.
- Oversee the design, build and delivery of secure, scalable end-to-end digital solutions, including web interfaces, workflow automation, system integration and secure cloud services.
- Drive innovation, exploration and operationalisation of new technologies to deliver business value.
- Build capability in modern software engineering, cloud, AI and automation practices.
- Build strong relationships with digital product leads, architects, third-party vendors and business stakeholders to turn strategic ideas into actionable solutions, maintaining alignment between engineering delivery and business priorities.
- Ensure digital platforms and solutions are secure, scalable, delivering seamless digital experiences and aligned with architecture principles.
- Maintain a strong awareness of software, cloud, AI trends, emerging technologies and industry best practices to drive innovation opportunities and actionable strategies for the team.
- Communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, engaging way to both technical and non-technical audiences
About you
- Strong people leadership skills and proven experience leading high-performing engineering teams in dynamic enterprise environments.
- Strong background in software engineering - web development, automation, system integration, enterprise systems, intelligent workflow solutions, software development.
- Deep understanding of cloud platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP) and modern software delivery practices (SecDevOps, CI/CD, Agile).
- Deep understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs) evaluation, deployment, training, fine tuning and optimisation.
- Proven experience operationalising machine learning, generative, agentic AI and digital emerging technologies.
- Experience leading digital innovation, AI and adoption of next-generation technologies, with ability to influence senior and executive leaders, connecting to business strategy, business value and measurable outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage priorities, resolve complex issues and drive outcomes in an agile, business-focused, collaborative environment.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence senior and executive leaders across all divisions.
- Demonstrates strategic thinking, adaptability, and APRA-wide mindset, especially in navigating uncertainty and change.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
