The role

APRA is seeking a Governance Risk Specialist to join the Non-Financial Risk team in the Cross-Industry Risk division. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to APRA’s mission as the prudential regulator of financial institutions. The role will:

  • play a pivotal role in regulating financial institutions by providing expert advice on governance risk, while having an opportunity to broaden your expertise across other non-financial risk areas

The team

APRA’s Non-Financial Risk function is integral to supervising financial institutions. The team provides critical advice and expertise:

  • on the risk architecture and behaviours at regulated entities to respond to current and emerging risks facing APRA’s regulated industries
  • that shapes APRA’s supervision methodologies to ensure robust regulatory practices
  • to guide projects which seek to transform the governance and behavioural risk practices across APRA-regulated industries
    for various internal divisions and a wide range of external industry stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute towards the strengthening of APRA’s governance framework for banks, insurers and superannuation trustees, ensuring governance standards reflect contemporary best practice
  • Engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders, providing specialist advice and uplifting capability
  • Lead prudential reviews (focusing on governance risk) and engage with regulated entities to drive improvement in risk outcomes
  • Identify and champion continuous improvement opportunities for team efficiency and effectiveness.

About you

  • Substantial knowledge and experience in governance, and familiarity with culture, remuneration and accountability practices in financial services
  • Experience leading reviews, including running interviews and workshops with senior leaders
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Substantial organisational, self and priority management skills, including proven ability to lead strategic engagement externally and coordinating cross-divisional processes
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field
  • Experience in consultancy, financial services, risk management and/or regulation is highly desirable.
